An emissions control device. This device is part of the exhaust system of most automobiles. In the exhaust of most autmobiles there are gasses which are harmful to the environment. Three of these gasses are unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide. When these gasses pass through a catalytic converter an oxidation or reduction chemical reaction occurs which turns them into water, carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen. The materials in a catalytic converter are called catalysts since they increase the speed at which the oxidation and reduction reactions occur.
